The ISO 9001 standard is undergoing its next scheduled revision, with the updated version expected to be published in 2026. This update replaces ISO 9001:2015 and reflects how organisations now operate in a more digital, risk-aware, and sustainability-focused environment. The revision does not redefine quality management principles; instead, it strengthens clarity, improves consistency, and aligns the standard with modern business expectations.
Organisations certified to ISO 9001:2015 do not need to rebuild their Quality Management System (QMS). However, they must prepare for targeted enhancements that influence leadership accountability, risk management, and organisational context.
The revised standard retains the familiar structure based on Annex SL, ensuring continuity across integrated management systems. However, several important refinements strengthen the effectiveness of existing requirements.
A key development involves greater emphasis on quality culture and ethical leadership. Top management must demonstrate stronger behavioural commitment to quality outcomes, ensuring that culture aligns with policy and strategic direction.
The standard also improves clarity around risk and opportunity management. Organisations must define, separate, and manage risks and opportunities more explicitly, ensuring consistency in planning and decision-making processes.
Another important change integrates climate-related considerations into organisational context. Businesses must assess whether environmental and climate factors influence their QMS and demonstrate how they respond where relevant. This aligns quality management with broader sustainability expectations.
The revision also improves guidance within Annex A, reducing ambiguity that previously led to inconsistent audit interpretations across certification bodies.

We recently engaged Kevin on a 6-month interim contract to lead and manage our Quality Team.
Kevin brought experience from differing industries and whilst he hadn’t worked directly within consumer electronics he soon got to grips with our requirements, translating those through our business processes and people with a quality engineering lens.
During his time with Vax, Kevin led, managed, and mentored the quality team, including realignment of roles and responsibilities and empowerment to facilitate autonomy and appropriate decision making. Kevin progressed our quality processes including as example our root cause analysis methods, using 8D reporting with emphasis on prioritisation of current issues.
Kevin worked to drive collaboration between the quality team and key stakeholders such as design and engineering with his knowledgeable, professional, and pragmatic approach.
