About
Quality systems that work on the shop floor, not just on audit day.
Hillscom is an independent quality and ISO management systems consultancy, founded in 2007 and based in Amesbury, Wiltshire. We help organisations in aerospace, defence, automotive, manufacturing, construction and technology build management systems that achieve certification, stand up to customer scrutiny and keep improving long after the auditor has left.

Who we are
Hillscom is led by Kevin Hills, founder and principal consultant. Kevin’s career began in tier-one automotive manufacturing, supplying components to global vehicle manufacturers, where he learned quality the hard way: on production lines, through Total Quality Management, Kaizen, SMED and structured problem solving with 8D, 5 Whys and Ishikawa analysis.
From there he moved into senior quality leadership across automotive, telecoms, aerospace and defence. His roles have included Head of Quality and Mission Assurance for the UK business of a global defence and aerospace prime, and Acting Quality Director at an advanced satellite communications manufacturer, where he built an AS9100D quality management system from the ground up through to certification. He has also led quality and engineering teams on an interim basis, stepping in to stabilise performance, develop people and leave stronger processes behind.
That mix of hands-on manufacturing experience and board-level quality accountability shapes how Hillscom works. We understand what auditors look for, but we also understand what a production manager, a programme director or a supplier needs from a management system to do their job.
How we work
We build management systems around how your organisation actually operates, rather than forcing it into a generic template. A twenty-person engineering business and a multi-site defence supplier need very different systems, and we size documentation, controls and records to match your risks, your customers and your people.
Where you hold or need more than one standard, we build an integrated management system. A single set of processes, one risk and opportunity register and one document control system is easier to run, easier to audit and far less likely to drift out of date than parallel systems maintained by different people.
You work directly with the consultant doing the work. There are no account managers and no junior staff learning on your project. We also make deliberate use of AI-assisted tools to speed up document drafting and analysis, with every output reviewed and owned by an experienced consultant, so more of your budget goes on judgement and less on typing.
Finally, we aim to leave capability behind. That means training your internal auditors, mentoring your quality team and making sure the people who own each process understand it, so the system keeps working when we step back.
Interim quality leadership
Some situations need more than advice. A certification is at risk after a difficult audit, a key customer has escalated quality concerns, supplier scorecards have turned red, or a head of quality has left at the worst possible moment. In these situations organisations need someone who can take ownership of the quality function immediately and bring it back under control.
Kevin has worked as a professional interim at head of quality, quality director and engineering section head level, in sectors ranging from aerospace and defence to consumer products and accreditation services. He arrives with the experience to read a situation quickly, the authority to make decisions and the credibility to work directly with managing directors, boards and senior management teams. He reports quality performance in the terms leadership cares about: customer risk, cost of poor quality, delivery performance and certification status.
A typical interim assignment follows a clear path:
- Assess and contain. In the first weeks, establish an honest baseline of where the risks lie, contain the issues affecting customers and agree priorities with top management.
- Stabilise. Close out the most significant nonconformities and customer complaints using disciplined root cause analysis, restore control of key processes and put meaningful performance indicators in place.
- Strengthen. Realign roles and responsibilities, develop and mentor the quality team, and improve the processes and working relationships with engineering, operations and suppliers that caused the problems in the first place.
- Hand over. Support the recruitment or development of a permanent successor and leave a documented, stable function that no longer depends on the interim.
Because Hillscom is an established limited company with professional indemnity insurance, interim engagements are straightforward to contract, whether full-time on site for a fixed period or a few days a week alongside your existing team. Find out more about our interim quality management support.
Industries we support
Our experience comes from working inside these sectors, not just advising them. Here is where we have supported organisations and what that work has involved.
Aerospace and space
We have taken an advanced satellite communications hardware manufacturer from no formal quality system to AS9100D certification, covering configuration management, first article inspection, counterfeit parts prevention, product safety and supplier control. We understand the demands that aerospace primes place on their supply chains and how to evidence them convincingly. Find out more about our aerospace and defence quality support and AS9100 consultancy.
Standards and methods: AS9100, AS9145, APQP, PPAP, first article inspection, supplier quality
Defence
Kevin has led quality and mission assurance for the UK operations of a major defence prime, working across programmes where product failure is not an option. We have implemented ISO 44001 collaborative business relationship management alongside an existing quality management system, building a quality culture that reaches from senior leadership to shop-floor operatives. We understand programme quality, customer-specific requirements and the scrutiny that defence contracts bring.
Standards and methods: ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO 44001, mission assurance, programme quality, supplier assurance
Automotive and tier-one supply
Automotive manufacturing is where Hillscom’s approach was formed. We have worked within tier-one suppliers to major vehicle manufacturers, applying automotive quality disciplines such as advanced product quality planning, production part approval, failure mode analysis and statistical process control in high-volume environments where customer scorecards and line-stop costs focus every decision.
Standards and methods: IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, control plans, SPC, 8D problem solving
Autonomous vehicles and AI technology
We have developed management system tools for a company developing AI for automated driving, tailored to the evolving UK and international regulatory landscape, including the Automated Vehicles Act 2024 and UNECE vehicle regulation work. Fast-moving technology businesses need systems that support innovation rather than slow it down, and increasingly need to demonstrate responsible AI governance. Read our insight on ISO 42001 AI management systems.
Standards and methods: ISO 9001, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, context and risk analysis, integrated management systems
Consumer products and manufacturing
For a leading UK household appliance brand, Kevin led the quality function on an interim basis: restructuring roles and responsibilities, strengthening root cause analysis through disciplined 8D reporting and building closer working between quality, design and engineering. We bring the same practical focus to manufacturing and engineering businesses of every size, from first certification to supplier development and cost-of-quality reduction.
Standards and methods: ISO 9001, supplier quality, 8D, root cause analysis, quality team development
Testing, inspection and accreditation
Kevin has served as interim engineering section head within a UK conformity assessment organisation, bringing key performance indicators back on track while a permanent appointment was made. Working on the assessment side gives us a clear view of how assessors think, which helps our clients prepare for certification with confidence.
Standards and methods: ISO 9001, interim leadership, performance management, engineering team leadership
Construction and the built environment
For construction consultancies, we have built integrated management tools covering context of the organisation and PESTLE analysis, interested parties, a risk and opportunity register and a controlled document register. Our support reflects the wider requirements construction clients face, including CDM 2015, ISO 19650 information management, PAS 91 pre-qualification and SSIP health and safety schemes.
Standards and methods: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, integrated management systems, document control
Professional services
Consultancies and service businesses often need certification to win tenders, but cannot afford a system that eats into billable time. We implement integrated ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems that are proportionate, easy to maintain and aligned with the 2026 editions of both standards.
Standards and methods: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, integrated management systems, internal audit
Standards and expertise
Hillscom supports ISO 9001 quality management, ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety, ISO 27001 information security, ISO 44001 collaborative business relationships, ISO 42001 AI management, AS9100 and AS9145 for aerospace and IATF 16949 for automotive. We are currently helping organisations plan their transition to ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026.
Alongside certification, we provide gap analysis, internal and supplier audits, management review support, interim quality leadership and training in auditing, problem solving and core quality tools.
Qualifications and credentials
Kevin holds ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, ISO 27001 Lead Implementer and ISO 44001 Lead Implementer qualifications. Hillscom has traded as an independent limited company since 2007 and holds professional indemnity insurance. We are independent of any certification body, so our advice is focused entirely on what is right for your organisation.

What our clients say
We engaged Kevin on a six-month interim contract to lead and manage our quality team. Kevin brought experience from differing industries and, whilst he hadn’t worked directly within consumer electronics, he soon got to grips with our requirements, translating those through our business processes and people with a quality engineering lens.
During his time with us, Kevin led, managed and mentored the quality team, including realignment of roles and responsibilities and empowerment to facilitate autonomy and appropriate decision making. Kevin progressed our quality processes, including our root cause analysis methods, using 8D reporting with emphasis on prioritisation of current issues.
Kevin worked to drive collaboration between the quality team and key stakeholders such as design and engineering with his knowledgeable, professional and pragmatic approach. Kevin stepped in, stepped up and took control seamlessly – exactly what we needed from an interim manager.
I hired Kevin as an interim section head for our engineering team while we took time to find a permanent replacement, and he has served us incredibly well in that role. Kevin made an immediate impact in the business as one would expect from an experienced interim manager. Kevin took firm control of his section and got all main performance indicators back on track very quickly.
I am confident that Kevin can achieve similar results across a wide spectrum of businesses and industries.
Kevin performed an excellent job for us as an interim section manager. Kevin has a strong personnel management skillset and sound understanding of quality management in the engineering sector, which is just what we needed!
I have been fortunate to work with Kevin in a fast-paced and challenging defence environment, where his experience and vast quality assurance skill set has added huge value across multiple projects. With the implementation of ISO 44001 along with integration of the QMS, Kevin has excelled in creating a quality culture that is adhered to from senior management to shop-floor operatives.
I would happily recommend his services to any industry facing any quality assurance difficulties.
