Interim Management Support
Quality leadership gaps have a habit of appearing at the worst possible moment: mid-recruitment, mid-audit cycle, or just as a critical delivery phase ramps up. Hillscom steps into Interim Head of Quality, Quality Director and Mission Assurance roles to fill that gap without the lead time a permanent hire requires.
This is not a caretaker arrangement. It means running the function: chairing management review, owning the audit programme, and making the calls a quality director would make, for as long as the organisation needs.
Scope and duration
Engagements range from a few months bridging a recruitment gap to considerably longer where the need is tied to a specific programme milestone or delivery phase. Scope is agreed up front, whether that is full accountability for the quality function or a defined brief such as leading a certification push, managing an AS9100 or ISO 9001:2026 transition, or stabilising a system after a difficult audit. It is reviewed as the engagement progresses.
Engagements can begin quickly once scope is agreed, since the need has usually arrived by the time the conversation starts. The working pattern, whether full-time on-site, a set number of days per week or a hybrid arrangement, is set to match what the organisation needs. Reporting lines are agreed at the outset, so it is clear from day one who the interim leader answers to and who answers to them.
The first weeks
The first weeks are spent building an honest picture of where things stand, rather than assuming the previous incumbent’s documentation tells the full story. That means reviewing open corrective actions, understanding where recent internal and external audits raised concerns, and getting a feel for how the quality function is perceived elsewhere in the business. Interim leadership is far more effective once that groundwork is done than if changes start on day one based on assumptions.
The value of an outside view
Because an interim quality director sits outside the usual internal politics and reporting relationships, some of the most valuable work is the kind a permanent hire might find harder to do quickly: making an honest call on whether a long-standing process is fit for purpose, flagging where a previous certification was achieved on paper rather than in practice, or having the conversations that needed to happen months ago but kept being deferred. An outside perspective, backed by authority to act, tends to move things that have been stuck. Where the system needs more than leadership, a gap analysis or audit support can run alongside.
Handover
Handover is treated as seriously as the engagement itself. Whether the role passes to a permanent hire or back to an internal team member, documentation, decisions and the reasoning behind them are left in a state a successor can pick up, not a stack of unexplained changes. Where useful, crossover time with an incoming permanent hire is built in, so continuity does not depend entirely on written notes. The aim is always a system left stronger than it was found.
Who it suits
Interim support suits organisations at very different scales: a small business that has never had a dedicated quality function and needs one built and led from scratch, through to a larger organisation with an established department that has lost its leader at a critical moment. In both cases the aim is the same: the quality function keeps moving forward rather than stalling until a permanent replacement is found.
