ISO 9001 Quality Management Consultancy
ISO 9001 is the most widely used management system standard in the world, and for good reason. It sets out a practical framework for understanding what your customers need, controlling the processes that deliver it, and improving over time based on evidence rather than guesswork. For many organisations it is also a commercial necessity: a condition of tender, a supplier approval requirement, or the entry ticket to a regulated supply chain.
The standard itself is not complicated. What goes wrong is usually the implementation: systems built around a generic template, procedures nobody reads, and a manual written to satisfy an auditor rather than to help the business. Hillscom builds ISO 9001 systems the other way round, starting from how your organisation works and documenting only what adds value.
ISO 9001:2026 is now published
The sixth edition of ISO 9001 was published in September 2026, replacing the 2015 version as the certifiable standard. It is an evolution rather than a rebuild. The ten-clause Harmonized Structure stays in place and most requirements carry over, but several changes will need evidence rather than a reworded policy:
Quality culture and ethical behaviour. Top management must now actively promote a quality culture and demonstrate ethical behaviour. Auditors will look for evidence in decisions, communications and training, not just a line in the quality policy.
Risks and opportunities separated. Clause 6.1 now treats risks and opportunities as two distinct requirements. A risk register that bundles them together will need restructuring so each is identified and evaluated on its own merits.
Planning of changes. Clause 6.3 now expects a closed-loop approach: plan the change, communicate it, monitor it, evaluate whether it worked and review it. Many organisations handle change informally, so this is often the most concrete gap to close.
Climate and context. Climate change and sustainability are now explicitly part of understanding your organisation’s context, carrying forward the 2024 amendment.
Existing certificates remain valid through a transition period of around three years. Your certification body will confirm the exact timetable, but there is no benefit in leaving it late. Any documentation written today should already reflect the 2026 requirements.
How Hillscom supports ISO 9001
First-time certification. For organisations new to ISO 9001, the work starts with understanding your processes, customers and risks, then building a proportionate system around them. That covers context and scope, policy and objectives, process mapping, document control, internal audit, management review and corrective action, all sized to your organisation rather than copied from a template. See management system implementation.
Transition to the 2026 edition. For certified organisations, a clause-by-clause gap analysis against the new edition shows exactly what needs to change and what can stay. The focus goes on the areas of substantive change first, so transition effort is spent where it matters.
Revitalising an existing system. Plenty of certified systems have drifted into box-ticking. A review can strip out duplication, simplify documentation and reconnect the system to how the business operates, often reducing effort while improving audit outcomes.
Integration. ISO 9001 shares its structure with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001 and others. If you need more than one standard, building an integrated management system from the start avoids running parallel processes for document control, audit and review. Aerospace and defence suppliers build on ISO 9001 through AS9100.
Why experience matters
Hillscom has more than thirty years of quality leadership across automotive, aerospace, defence and technology, including senior quality roles inside the kinds of organisations that depend on ISO 9001 every day. That means advice grounded in what works on a shop floor and in a boardroom, not just what reads well in a manual. Work is delivered personally, with no hand-off to junior staff after the sale.
